"We are like the dreamer who dreams and then lives inside the dream."

- David Lynch

When we dream, we walk, talk and fuse representations of the real and the extraordinary together. Our common experiences are suddenly shifted to an uncertain angle and the boundaries of our real and imagined lives become blurred and blended. Some dreams happen subconsciously, while others are experienced while awake and with intent.

Artmaking is a dream-like process. It involves bringing together ingredients from our life, the lives around us, and our dream life, to create an unpredictable new experience. The artworks in Dream It Out Loud ask you to explore this unpredictable encounter, where places, people, shapes and patterns converge into something not yet perceived. Like the logic of dreams, these artworks see something newly born from the scrambling of life and the imagination. Here, we see the lyrics of favorite songs mix with personal references to create hybrid albums; or designs for clothes and shoes mixing with desires for sugary deserts to become the blueprint for wildly flavorful clothing lines; or even artworks that emerge from seemingly nightmare-like scenarios to become doorways into entirely new creative processes. In Dream It Out Loud, we encounter a world where dreams live and merge together to form an entirely unique creative vision.

Dream It Out Loud is an exhibition with artists from the Progressive Art Studio Collective (PASC) program. This is our fourth year of exhibiting at The Gallery at Westland City Hall, bringing the artwork of PASC to the halls of the Westland Government. This year the exhibition features artwork by 30 artists all from the PASC Westland Studio Program.

Launched in 2021, PASC is the first progressive art and design studio and exhibition program in Detroit and Wayne County dedicated to supporting artists with developmental disabilities and mental health differences to advance artistic practices and build individual careers in the art and design fields. PASC runs three studios in Detroit, Westland, and Southgate and works with over 190 artists across Wayne County. PASC is a program of Services to Enhance Potential (STEP), a non-profit service organization founded in 1972 that provides services and supports for more than 1,500 individuals with disabilities and mental health differences across Southeastern Michigan.
